Description (physical)

One of five markers made from contrasting stone and carefully chosen lettering. They are picturesquely positioned on Peddars Way running - in the sequence adopted here - from near Stowbeddon Plantation to the Coastal road near Holme-next-the sea. Their precise locations have not been indicated to preserve the sense of surprise for the cyclists/walkers on Peddars Way.

Description (iconographical)

Hugh Lupton told the story of where the landscapes and its landmarks came from and Liz McGowan created a series of temporary sculptures on the Peddars Way, taking her inspiration from the straight Roman road the curve of the land and how generations have interacted with the land. As part of the projects the artists held workshops for local communities and a storybook, CD and a teachers’ pack have been produced. The five permanent waymarkers were then carved by Tom Perkins. The idea of a Songline comes from the Australian Aboriginal belief system in which each ancient track is the score of a vast epic song whose verses tell the stories of how the landscape Songline for Norfolk using story poetry image and song to evoke the landscape history and geology of Peddars Way. Hugh Lupton’s account of the Norfolk Song Line reads: As you walk the Peddars Way you find yourself becoming more and more aware of all the others who have trodden the same ground whether they be Stone Age hunters Roman soldiers Saxon settler or medieval pilgrims. But remember that you walking in your time are as much part of everything that surrounds you as any traveller has been. All the past that has led to your moment is held like a great secret in the landscape that surrounds you. hat surrounds you as any traveller has been.
