Inscriptions Panel with turkey feet is inscribed: LONDON 85 MILES and initials (very small) LHS (left hand side). The designer was a local - Sally Adams (email) from artist) - and the architects a commercial firm, the Stanley Bragg Partnership, Colchester.

Description (physical)

Sally Adams has described the commission and the panels: The architects contacted the Sainsbury Centre to ask for an artist who worked in metal, and they in turn asked local artist John Foster (now deceased). Whilst John did co-ordinate the casting and installation, he asked me to design and sculpt the originals in clay, as he did not do that sort of sculpting.

Description (iconographical)

There was a brief that the plaques should somehow reflect surroundings. So I designed 4 themes as follows: 1)The abstract of apple and barrel as reference to Attleboroughs cider making. 2)The abstract of hayfork and scythe as reference to local farming. 3) The abstract of Turkey imprints & mileage to London as reference to Turkey farming and that they were literally walked to london. (these imprints were actually taken by myself by pressing live turkey feet into clay!) & finally 4) This was the most abstract of all & probably the reason why it is incorrectly listed as a reference to the motor trade. This plaque simply represents the architecture of this particular branch of Sainsburys. If you look at the building it has large curved girders that form the entrance facade. This plaque shows a section of the girder
