Description (iconographical) |
Queen Victoria celebrated her Golden Jubilee on 20 and 21 June 1887. Her state procession through London was attended by Indian cavalry and many Indian dignitaries joined in the official celebrations The statue celebrates her as Empress wearing the Star of India of the order of chivalry which she had founded in 1861. The Order includes members of three classes: the British Sovereign was and still is Sovereign of the Order. The mantle and collar were worn only by Knights Grand Commanders. The unveiling was reported in the local paper with the additional information that: 'Mr W Stephenson of Woodbridge mason was instructed by the Committee to supply the statue and he employed Mr J Wormleighton of Chelsea as the sculptor who executed a life-size model of the Queen in Portland stone.' The otherwise now unknown Mr Wormleighton based his figure on Sir Joseph Boehm's outstanding bronze in Windsor. He matched the severe expression and patterning of her dress, but not the sway of her and command of her pose with outstretched sceptre. The statue was moved a few feet down the garden to make way for the WWI war memorial.
