Description (physical) |
The mural is set on the side of the Ber Street Gates Pub towards the original site of the Ber Street Gates. It shows the gate with portcullis flanked by one tower. This was the state of the gate in 1720 when drawn by J. Kirkpatrick. His drawings were reproduced in the engravings by Henry Ninham published in 1864. Moray-Smith followed the engraving closely adding some vegetation - the people and flags.
Description (iconographical) |
The first references to Ber Street Gate are found in documents in the reign of Henry III in the second and third quarters of the 13th century. It guarded the road to the Castle. The remodelling of the gate financed by Richard Spynk is described briefly in an account of 1343 and inscription in Latin referred to the repair undertaken during Robert Freeman's period as mayor in 1680. It was demolished in 1807
