Description (physical)

The former Naional Provincial Bank is -as Pevsner notes - based on Wren's city churches - an unusual choice in 1924. It is far from a pastiche and makes imaginative use of the corner site where Bedford and London Streets join. This care extends to the use of the classical orders and detailing. The east facing entrance is framed by giant Corinthian columns under a broken triangular pediment. The keystone with its cartouche refers to the National Provincial Bank - which can still be made out on the cornice under the lettering of its new name. The panels set above the windows flanking the doorway combine feathery ribbons with fruit and flowers.
