Description (physical)

The obelisk now stands in splendid isolation surrounded at its rear by trees facing fields. It originally connected with an avenue of trees leading to the now destroyed Curd's Hall, just to the east in Little Fransham. There is a similar brick obelisk at Costessey which probably dates from slightly earlier (NFsnCO001)

Description (iconographical)

The obelisk celebrated the Treaty of Paris signed on May 30, 1814 which ended the war between France and the Sixth Coalition of the United Kingdom Russia, Austria Sweden and Prussia. Nelson must have been celebrated since John Drosier had married Lord Nelson's second cousin Mary Nelson. Drosier was presumably the squire of Curd's Hall in nearby Little Fransham, once associated with the obelisk by an avenue of trees.
