Description (physical) |
The figures were chosen through a competition involving Sewell Park College, Open Academy and Angel Rd Junior School, based on the quality of their artwork and the reasons given for choosing the characters. Katy Hallett prepared the designs by local pupils Charlotte Smith (Edith Cavell), Rufus Child (Nelson) and Peter Allen (Stephen Fry) to be cut as sheet steel.
Description (iconographical) |
A few years back the council received Lottery funding from Sustrans under the Connect 2 programme. This was to deliver pedestrian / cycle improvements in the city, and funded (among other things) traffic-free routes across Mousehold Heath and improvements to help better connect Norwich routes into the National Cycle Network. Connect 2 was a national project, and alongside it ran an arts project which commissioned a 'portrait bench' in each of the locations where routes were built. Each of these comprises a bench, accompanied by three life-size figures of local note. The location was selected as it's on the intersection of cycle routes and in a generally prominent location. Mousehold Heath was briefly considered, but aside from the sculptures being seen by fewer people, we felt they were far more likely to be stolen or damaged if they were out-of -the-way. They should be fairly proof against vandalism since the material is intended to weather, can be cleaned with a jet washer and will survive being sanded if necessary. The bench was set against a wall since disability groups had requested that it have a back and arms. This meant it could not go in front of the figures without obscuring them and spoiling the composition, it also seemed sensible to place the bench where anyone sitting on it was sheltered from the rain.
