Description (physical)

The impressive rough granite menhir is set within a gated garden, with seats and information plaques, now incongruously set besides exit from staff car park and before the main prison block.

Description (iconographical)

RAF Watton had opened in 1939, with more substantial than usual buildings by the Ministry of War Architect’s Department, when it was made over to the Blenheims of No. 2 Bomber Group. The USAAF operated there in 1944 and 1945, with B- 17 Flying Fortresses and Liberators. Griston is at the southern edge of the airfield. There are two further memorials to USAAF, one in Watton, and the other in the churchyard of St Peter and Paul, Griston. The memorial must have been put in place as the prison, which first opened in 1985, was still under construction
