About Us
The Recording Archive began in 2006 with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to create a digital database of public monuments and sculpture in Norfolk and Suffolk as part of the PMSA’s project to map the public sculpture of Britain. This includes a series of specially commissioned books; ours, The Public Sculpture of Norfolk and Suffolk, Richard Cocke with photographs by Sarah Cocke, the sixteenth in the series, was published in June 2013. According to one reviewer ‘the scrupulously researched – not to say at times entertaining – contextual commentaries and the quality of the photography ably support the value of the book as a long-lasting source of reference.’
The PMSA’s website is: www.pmsa.org.uk
We continue to add new entries to racns and re-photograph monuments. Recent additions include: Antony’s Gormley’s Standing Figure on loan to the Landmark Trust in Aldeburgh, Sarah Lucas’s Perceval, on long term loan at Snape, and the recent village sign at Walpole St Andrew. The Norwich War Memorials, were re-photographed after cleaning in 2014, with the addition of the maquette for the Monument to Edith Cavell; there are also new photographs of the Barque and Charity in the Fishermen’s hospital, Great Yarmouth.
The public sculpture of Norwich can be found on the map on the website of Sculpture for Norwich.
All photographs are: copyright Norfolk & Suffolk Sculpture @ www.racns.co.uk. You are welcome to re-use and credit any photograph, for non-commercial purposes, except those not our copyright. Contact us for permission to reproduce and higher quality JPEGs and TIFFS.
The Website
There are two main parts:
- The Sculptures Choose a sculpture from one of the drop down menus: artist, title, town or references (our rather esoteric numbering system) . Once you have the first image on screen you can work through the others individually by clicking on the blue button or on the green one for a slide show. The grid references are no longer linked to a map.
- Sculpture Trails a series of downloadable PDF files. Those for Norwich include a map, the remainder are linked to Google Maps, indicating the location of the sculpture on the trail.
There is also a Contact us page for queries about the archive or to contact the co-ordinator.
